DEVELOPMENT OF THE AXIAL FLOW SURFACE EFFECT VEHICLE
This paper reviews development of the axial flow surface effect vehicle, which is propelled clear of the surface by lift air, and cruises at a velocity two to four times as fast as a comparable hovercraft. A study based on a generalized edgeflow analysis illustrates the performance potential. Aerodynamic effects are more significant than aerostatic effects for this type which operates at a ram pressure equal to or higher than cushion pressure.
