A HULL MONITORING SYSTEM FOR SAFE AND ECONOMIC OPERATIONS
For the safe and economical operation of a cargo ship, the Hull Monitoring System (HMS) was designed, fabricated, and installed aboard the SS AMERICAN AQUARIUS for an 11-month sea trial evaluation. The HMS is a prototype automated system which monitors dynamic and static ship conditions and accordingly provides a single operator with information and recommendations that will aid him in making decisions for the safe and efficient operation of the vessel. With sensors installed throughout the ship to measue critical ship variables, the HMS includes a minicomputer, a data disk for storing computer programs and historical information, a keyboard for computer-operator interaction in conversational language (computer printouts including preset questions, descriptions of inquiry options, and responses to operator inquiries), and various information displays and audible and visible alarms for unsafe conditions. The HMS computes, analyzes, and displays draft and trim, stability, hull stress, slamming, cargo lashing force, and flooding. A thermal printer records a permanent record of the computer-operator interchange as well as of the parameter measurements, computations, analyses, recommendations, and displays for subsequent review and evaluation.
