DIGITAL SELECTIVE CALLING THE POTENTIAL FOR DRAMATIC IMPROVEMENTS IN MARITIME COMMUNICATIONS
The U.S. Maritime Administration has sponsored several programs to improve the operating efficiency of the U.S. Merchant Fleet. One of these programs, Digital Selective Calling, has the objective of improvement of communications by reducing the delay in contacting a ship at sea. Digital selective calling equipment has been developed and tests conducted which prove the feasibility of using this technique. This paper outlines the problems to which the SELCALL development is addressed and reflects the revolutionary impact SELCALL implementation could create on merchant ship communications.
