WIRELESS APPLICATIONS FOR INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS

Are wireless providers overlooking a huge market opportunity? Some observers in the ITS industry think so, as state and federal governments gear up for building the highways of the future. Intelligent highways have conjured cars that will drive themselves by positioning and communication with nearby vehicles, or assist drivers via electronic road maps and turn-by-turn guidance. This is far from reality. Estimates by the University of Michigan's Office for the Study of Automotive Transportation project that a conservative 10 percent of cars will be equipped with such navigation systems by the year 2005. This article looks at areas within ITS where PCS operators may find their niche.
