INNOVATIVE DESIGN AT PORT EVERGLADES BULKHEAD REDUCES MATERIAL AND CONSTRUCTION COSTS
Two design concepts applied in remedial work to a bulkhead, resulted in a 24 percent material and construction and cost saving. Steel wall components consisting of H-piles and lighter z-sheets were used in lieu of conventional sheet piling sections, and an augered diagonal tie back system as a alternative to the horizontal road dead-man wall. In an effort to obtain competitive bids from all manufactures, a performance type specification was written and a list of comparable installations in which the proposed materials had been used was requested. The H-pile sections are sized to resist the total incemental load and are driven to fixed end penetration. The Z-sheets are sized to transfer the loads laterally and need not be driven beyond the theoretical zero point in the stress diagram. Preliminary work indicated that the most cost-effective design was centered around an auger type post tensioned enchorage system. The wall system selected provides increments for anchorage spacing of 4.92 ft. along the length of wall being placed. Each anchor (transfer load of 150.0 kips) will be placed, grouted and proof loaded to 195.0 kips then relaxed to the transfer load.
