FUNDAMENTAL STUDIES ON THE THICKNESS OF CRUDE OIL FILM ON SEA WATER SURFACES
The thickness of the average monomolecular films of 5 kinds of crude oil was measured with a suspended plate-type surface balance to elucidate fundamental properties of mineral oils, which are discharged on the sea surface and often give rise to serious damage to various kinds of marine life and fisheries. The largest area than the film of 1 kg of oil discharged into the sea can cover also was calculated. The average molecular wt of these kinds of crude oil was measured by the Rest cryoscopic method. The thickness of the film of crude oil obtained in the experiment indicated a much smaller value than that of the oil films on water which had been reported previously.
