COMPUTER CONTROLLED PATH GUIDANCE WITH REFERENCE TO RADIO AIDS

When computers started to be introduced on ships there was a predominant tendency to create large integrated systems based on a central computer. The idea was, basically, to solve a range of problems of pressing importance which make the costs of a computer worthwhile. Meanwhile an important drop in computer costs allows the supply of independent computer systems. This separation promises an increase of availability and maintenance ability and probably a higher perfection of software. The computerized steering stand NAUTOMAT, presented in this paper, is designed with this philosophy. It controls the ship's track on great circle connections between selectable way points. Control is based on selectable radio aids which continuously transmit the ship's position into the computer. A control accuracy of a few metres has been experienced. Such accuracy definitely cannot be attained by manual correction of conventional autopilot control. Predominant benefits of NAUTOMAT consist in easy voyage planning, increase of security in restricted waters and in an essential increase of efficiency especially on surveying, dredging and fishing vessels.
