FRENCH SAFETY NET

This article describes the installation of the Dragnet vehicle arresting system on the highway between France and Spain at Biarritz. During a demonstration, a 40t articulated lorry was driven into a series of Dragnets at 85kph. It was safely stopped in under 80m, without harm to either driver or vehicle. In this trial, eight nets were used at staggered stations along a trap enclosed by barrier walls; each net was attached to two energy absorbers. The first net was designed to catch a car as well as a lorry. The Dragnet system uses the same principle as aircraft arresters on aircraft carriers. It is said to be extremely flexible, and can be installed and removed in minutes, and adapted to any road width. It can also be located in median areas and on road shoulders, thus eliminating the potentially dangerous entry angles of many existing lorry traps. A Dragnet system has been installed in a reversible lanes system on the Kennedy Expressway at Chicago, IL, USA, and a prototype system is being developed for use at American railway crossings.
