REBUILDING WYOMING'S RURAL ROADS

Although the rural roads of Wyoming have long played a vital role in the life of the local communities, they have suffered from the minimal maintenance accorded lightly trafficked roads. Now, however, a federal-aid highway program has been established to provide funding for improvement of county roads. The Off-System Highway Program provides federal funding for the xonstruction and improvement of roads and bridges which are not located on any federal-aid highway system and have not beenpreviously eligible for improvement with federal highway funds. The State Highway Department assists the counties in the administration of the funds. In accordance with the federal guidelines, the funds can also be used to eliminate or improve high-hazard locations and railroad highway crossings, hazardous roadside obstacles, improving traffic control devices, and other projects.
