MODELLING RESILIENT AND PERMANENT DEFLECTIONS IN GRANULAR AND SOIL PAVEMENT LAYERS

By means of a European Union-funded co-operative research project between several pavement research centers, the testing, characterization, and model implementation of the non-linear resilient and permanent behaviour of both soils and granular materials has been achieved. The paper summarizes the work of the project briefly discussing the problems of obtaining representative laboratory data from repeated load triaxial tests, the formulation and applicability of material models, the importance of non-linearity and its implementation into finite element non-linear analytical tools. Illustrative data is presented and the results of an analytical study briefly compared with in-situ measurements. It is concluded that the overall approach provides a cogent means of assessing, describing, and predicting the behaviour of the soil and unbound materials in pavement constructions.
