LET'S GO ROUND AND ROUND
The modern roundabout is a popular traffic control device in many European countries, New Zealand, and Australia, and it is gaining some attention in the United States. A kind of cousin to the traffic circle, the roundabout differs in that traffic entering the roundabout yields to traffic in the circle and a deflection at the entrance forces cars to slow down. Modern roundabouts are generally smaller than traffic circles. Wider circles are used to increase capacity. This article describes the many benefits of the roundabout. The author urges government agencies and design professionals to establish design guidelines for this alternative intersection.
