TRAFFIC DETECTOR DESIGNS FOR ISOLATED INTERSECTIONS
The safe and efficient operation of intersections under traffic-actuated control are largely dependent on the quality of traffic detector design. This article recommends specific traffic detector designs for use at rural and urban intersections that are not part of coordinated systems. The basis of the recommendation is the safe and efficient performance provided by the designs through their ability to provide dilemma zone protection, and their operational efficiency as demonstrated using new evaluation techniques. The costs of the proposed detector designs are discussed briefly and minimized to the extent possible.
