LARGE STONE HOT MIX ASPHALT - STATE OF THE ART
The paper presents various aspects of the state of the art of large stone hot mix asphalt technology. A method is suggested for preparing test specimens using large size aggregates and the results of introducing large stones to the conventional asphalt concrete mix are outlined, including laboratory tests on specimens with large-size aggregates. Several test procedures have been used to design uniformly graded large stone mixtures, including: vibratory compaction procedures, gyratory compaction, and the Marshall procedure. The design of a large stone asphalt mix (LSAM), using a 6" diameter mould and based on a procedure in an ASTM Subcommittee standard, is detailed. Descriptions are given of LSAM lay down operation, and of equipment used for LSAM compaction. There is a discussion of the extensive field experience of using LSAM in various states of the USA. The authors recommend the use of a quality control routine, to follow pavement construction using LASM, to ensure its close adherence to various design parameters. It was found that: (1) the Marshall mix design method has design disadvantages when used with aggregates of maximum size exceeding 25mm; (2) LSAM mix design and construction methods are not well developed; and (3) LSAM offers several desirable properties for heavy-duty asphalt pavements.
