THE NEED FOR DEVELOPMENT OF A TEST PROCEDURE FOR ADHESION OF BITUMEN
The rehabilitation work for a stretch of Indian National Highway near Bombay included a bituminous overlay, consisting of various layers. Distress developed in the top dense bituminous macadam and bituminous concrete layers during the next two to three months. This paper discusses the authors' investigation of the causes of distress, and presents suggestions for further research. At first, small potholes developed along the central longitudinal joint of two paving lanes of the dense bituminous macadam or bituminous concrete layer of the carriageway. Potholes developed later in both the paving lanes. Disintegration occurred in the bituminous layers, due to stripping of bitumen film from aggregate particles. It seems that insufficient time was allowed for the development of adhesion of bitumen film with aggregate particles, and that at least five days are needed. Further damage was caused when rain entered the voids between the film and the particles. It was found that distress starts and is larger where the bituminous layer has lower compaction density. It is essential to develop and standardise a procedure for quantitative measurement of adhesion of bitumen film with aggregate particles, to enable a relationship between adhesion and time to be suggested.
