TRANSPORT, LAND-USE AND THE ENVIRONMENT. CHAPTER 5: URBAN PRODUCTIVITY AND SUSTAINABILITY - IMPACTS OF TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGE
The author suggests that the transition to an information economy requires new models to describe post industrial activities and guide urban development towards competitiveness and sustainability. One effect of the increased use of telecommunications is the the dispersal of activities and increased travel. A simple model of urban land use is described which has two parameters a) the land use parameter measuring the dispersal of employment relative to housing and b) the transport parameter measuring trip length. The characteristics of selected US, UK and Australian cities are compared. Factors which will influence commuting are discussed. Models being developed to take account of land use, transport, communications, commuting and environmental impact are noted. For the covering abstract see IRRD 883195.
