AN EFFECTIVE METHOD FOR AUSCULTING THE STRUCTURE OF THE ROADS
All the road management systems involve a maintenance strategy which is most often based on the evolution knowledge of both a surface quality criterion and a structural quality criterion. On flexible and semi flexible pavements the latter should be defined through the mechanical performances of: the subground (treated or not treated), the foundation or base course when not treated, the upper treated and bituminous layers. This paper describes an effective method giving in situ mechanical characteristics of these structures. Through a back calculation procedure the method gives the elastic modulus of bituminous layer, the treated foundation modulus or base course one and the rigidity of subgrade, being given the deflection basin measured by the CEBTP Curviameter. The road is auscultated by the Curviameter, in each of measurements is defined a deflection basin. The difference, between this one and the deflection basin computed by a numerical simulation, is minimized through a back calculation. The numerical simulation gives to each layer a linear law but a no linearity of a subgrade. In case of road structures with untreated material layer between treated foundation and bituminous layers (called sandwich structure), the authors propose two abacus giving mechanical characteristics of layer bituminous and intermediate untreated layer, through characteristics of the deflection basin : the minimal curvature radius R, the abscisse of the inflection points L, the maximal deflexion d.
