PAVEMENT ANALYSIS: CASE STUDY ON THE SEASONAL VARIATION EFFECTS
During the last few decades, nondestructive deflection testing has become an integral part of the structural evaluation of pavements. Recent research work has indicated that the response of the pavement structure depends not only on the type and rate of loading, but also on the temperature and the moisture condition of the various layers. In this paper, the effects of the temperature, moisture condition and their seasonal variation are presented. For the purpose of this study, a number of in-service pavements were selected to represent the range of different pavement types encountered in Northern Ireland. Thermocouples and moisture content cells were installed in the various layers of these sites. During a period of over two years, the cycles of temperature and moisture condition were monitored. The sites were tested using the FWD for six seasons. Deflection data were analysed and the structural properties of the various layers were backcalculated using a newly developed computer program based on a Finite Element model. This paper presents the effects of seasonal variations on the measured deflections and the backcalculated moduli. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD 883133.
