THE PERMANENT DEFORMATION OF A GRANULAR MATERIAL MODELLED USING HOLLOW CYLINDER TESTING
A series of laboratory tests is described using both a repeated load triaxial and repeated load hollow cylinder apparatus. The main material tested is a 4mm down crushed rock, but comparisons are made with larger, more realistic aggregates. The permanent deformation response of the material to repeated loading is shown to be very sensitive to the type of stress regime applied. In particular, deformations recorded under a repeated rotating stress field differ significantly from those observed in conventional repeated loading tests. The results have been used to characterise the accumulation of permanent deformation within a granular material on any repeated stress path, and equations are presented. The degree to which the equations match the deformations measured in the laboratory is assessed. The characteristic equations are then applied in various ways to the prediction of rut development within a pavement layer. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD 883133.
