LOAD TEST ON A CAST IRON JACK ARCH BRIDGE

This paper describes a load test and subsequent analysis of a cast iron jack arch bridge, carried out by the Transport Research Laboratory. The aims of the load test were to obtain data on the behaviour of the bridge under load and to use this data to determine a better analytical model of the deck. This model was then used in conjunction with the required assessment loading to determine a more appropriate rating for the bridge. The revised model was based on a simple load distribution method normally used for jack arch bridges. The analysis enabled the capacity of the bridge to be revised. A capacity of 25 tonnes was arrived at by using the test data in conjunction with the simplified distribution method normally used for bridges of this type.
