ASSESSMENT AND RECONSTRUCTION OF ARCH STRUCTURES OVER THE BASINGSTOKE CANAL
This paper covers the case histories of restoration work to two eighteenth century arch structures over the Basingstoke Canal. The historical background outlines the original setting out technique and explains the inclusion of these structures in Surrey County Council's bridge strengthening programme. The Mytchett Place case history covers the assessment of the modified bridge deck and then the design and construction of a replica of the original masonry arch. The Guildford Road case outlines a similar assessment and then details an alternative design to replicate the original bridge using a reinforced concrete arch faced with traditional materials.
