ROCK AND SOIL DESCRIPTION AND CLASSIFICATION - A VIEW FROM INDUSTRY

The subject of description and classification has advanced a long way from the early days of the sciences of soil and rock mechanics. In UK practice this was most recently formalised in BS 5930:1981. This Code advanced the subject substantially, but is generally acknowledged to contain significant omissions, errors and ambiguities. The problems in the current Code are discussed, and suggested revisions to that Code presented, to indicate the way forward. The paper outlines the historical background, to put current practice into context, and the principles of description and classification of soil and rock for engineering purposes. The process by which the degree of interpretation increases from an exposure, to samples, to strata descriptions, to interpretative reports is described. Some of the more common problems in current description and classification are discussed briefly. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD 883023.
