THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF QUALITY MANAGEMENT TO SITE INVESTIGATION
This paper is written from the site investigation contractor's viewpoint to deal with current concerns on how to "assure" the quality of an investigation to an agreed standard. The following key points are reviewed: impact of geological variations, contract terms which are incompatible with the concept of self-checking quality plans, and appropriate assessment and certification. Quality is not optional - it is essential, but does not happen by chance. To assist the contractor, detailed guidance is given on preparing a relevant Quality Management System (QMS) to BS 5750 which will avoid the pitfalls of over-documentation and the complications of third party involvement. It is concluded that the industry should adopt a uniform QMS embodying 'self-certification' as the cost-effective means of applying quality management. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD 883023.
