CAMBRIDGESHIRE'S NEW SUPERQUARRY
The paper describes ARC Central's Needingworth Quarry in Cambridgeshire, England, which is said to cover the largest area ever proposed for quarry development in the UK. The development opens up land previously considered inaccessible, and has at its centre a new plant processing 1 million tonnes of materials per year. It will initially process concrete aggregates and building sand from an estimated 1.9 million tonnes in the Barleycroft area. When exhausted, within about two years, the site's field conveyor will be redirected across the River Ouse to Willingham and Over Fen, where about 24 million tonnes of reserves are known to exist. The article describes the site's geology and hydrogeology, planning, development, gravel processing, sand plant, infrastructure, control system, and restoration. In the gravel processing plant, raw feed material is washed, screened, and crushed to produce gravel of six sizes and sand of three grades; silt is removed from the sand. The long-term aim of the site's rehabilitation scheme is to create typical Ouse valley landscape corridors on both sides of the river, with grazing on the west side, where an interim restoration scheme will be implemented first, and cultivated fields on the east side.
