USING COMPRESSION WAVE ULTRASONIC TRANSDUCERS TO MEASURE THE VELOCITY OF SOUND WAVES AND HENCE DETERMINE DYNAMIC MODULUS OF ELASTICITY FOR CONCRETE
This paper presents a new method for measuring the elastic properties of solid materials, that has been developed at Liverpool University, England. The dynamic modulus of elasticity and Poisson's ratio can be estimated for concrete and other solid materials, by measuring the velocity of surface (Rayleigh) waves generated by placing two compression wave ultrasonic transducers on the solid's surface. The Poisson's ratio and the velocity of the shear waves can also be calculated, in terms of the velocities of the ultrasonic and Rayleigh waves. The proposed method was investigated in an experimental programme, for which three types of concrete were selected. For each type of concrete, one 200mm x 500mm x 500mm block and three 100mm x 100mm x 500mm prisms were made, for use in various measurements. Both types of specimen were assumed to have similar properties, because they were cast from the same batch for each concrete type, and subjected to the same compaction and curing conditions.
