AUTOMATED LABORATORY TESTING FOR SOIL/WATER CHARACTERISTIC CURVES
This paper presents a laboratory testing method for obtaining matric suction saturation curves. The automated laboratory system can generate drying and wetting curves, and hysteresis loops at any prescribed level. Curves of water content as a function of pressure were measured on soil samples placed in Tempe cells. The procedure is continuous, yielding the entire matric suction/saturation curve. This paper describes the basic test equipment and procedure as well as matric suction saturation curves of reconstituted fine sand, undisturbed sand, and sandy loam. Hysteretic behavior is demonstrated and difficulties in data analysis and interpretation are addressed. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD 881647.
