MEASUREMENT OF THE INTERACTION OF SOIL MECHANICAL PROPERTIES AND HYDRAULIC PROCESSES WITH A MODIFIED TRIAXIAL TEST

Laboratory investigation of hydraulic processes in soils with a high potential of swelling and shrinkage, show in most cases a high variability, which does not only depend on the heterogenous soil and pore matrix, but also on the stress state to which the soils sample is exposed during the test. Therefore a triaxial cell was modified in order to investigate the behaviour of a specimen, which is exposed either to a defined external (vertical or horizontal stress) or internal stress state (tensile stresses due to desiccation). This modified triaxial test enables horizontal and vertical strain to be recorded at different positions as well as the hydraulic characteristics to be calculated by using the inverse method.
