DEFORMABILITY OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS SUBJECTED TO REPEATED MOVING LOADS
The viscoelastic deformations of an asphalt concrete half space subjected to a long sequence of moving loads are calculated on the basis of laboratory creep data. The experimental creep compliance was evaluated by unconfined compressive creep tests in the temperature range between 20 and 50 C for times from 0.1 up to 1000. A simple analytical representation for the creep compliance master curve was found and introduced into the viscoelastic constitutive equations. The memory effect associated with a sequence of moving loads was calculated at different velocities, taking into account the influence of the waiting time between consecutive loads. The reference temperature for calculation was 20 C. It was shown that elastic design methods must be complemented with a specific viscoelastic analysis since the elastic theory underestimates the deformability of lower layers as compared to the surface layers. Furthermore, the contributin was found to be relevant in some critical but realistic traffic conditions: high flow density, and slow and heavy traffic. /Author/
