REPORT ON THE NISU ROAD INJURY INFORMATION PROGRAM: PROGRESS, DEVELOPMENTS AND FUTURE DIRECTIONS
The AIHW National Injury Surveillance Unit undertook a Road Injury Information Program to enable important deficiencies in information on road injury to be identified and as far as possible rectified. Health sector information on road injury is now more readily available. A number of deficiencies in available information have been identified and new data systems have been planned and/or developed to fill gaps in the available information. Also, NISU has developed new ways of looking at available information, for example, through small area spatial mapping. Delays in availability of health sector information to NISU have been reduced and the processing of information has been made more efficient, thereby substantially reducing publication delays. The potential for duplication of effort has been minimised through regular intersectoral liaison and clients' data needs have been surveyed and regularly monitored. Future needs for information on road injury can be largely accommodated through a focus on injury generally. The developments recommended and planned by NISU over the next 5 years that will continue to improve information on road injury are outlined. (a)
