BACKCALCULATION OF MATERIAL PROPERTIES BASED ON NON-LINEAR MATERIAL BEHAVIOR

This paper deals with the development of a computer program for backcalculating non-linear pavement material parameters using the finite element method. The fortran computer program, 2DB, runs on a 32-bit personnel computer. Applications are illustrated by reference to the Axisymetric problem of a falling weight deflectometer (FWD) on flexible and rigid pavements. A non-linear, hyperbolic, stress-strain relationship is used for the base, subbase, and subgrade soils. Results show that a wide range in moduli, varying both vertically and horizontally, can occur within the base and subgrade layers of a pavement system due to stresses induced by the FWD loading. Pavements can be represented more realistically using finite elements than with linear, elastic methods most of which are limited to three or four layers with no horizontal variation in moduli.
