COMPACTION AND SHEAR STRENGTH TESTING OF STONE MATRIX ASPHALT MIXTURES IN THE GYRATORY TESTING MACHINE (WITH DISCUSSION AND CLOSURE)
This paper presents the findings of part of a study to identify a more appropriate design procedure for Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA) mixtures. The first critical step in the development of a design procedure is to establish a suitable compaction method since both volumetric and strength properties are directly related to the relative density of compacted samples. This paper deals specifically with the results of compaction and shear strength tests of SMA mixtures with the Corps of Engineer's Gyratory Testing Machine (GTM).
