TRANSPORT AND RURAL WALES. A POLICY DOCUMENT

This document is the latest contribution of the Countryside Commission for Wales (CCW) to the current UK transport debate. It discusses the individual's role in transport, transport change at the local and national levels, and issues concerned with the planning and design of roads. An Appendix considers direct, secondary, and indirect effects of rural roads on wildlife and landscape. Seven specific Welsh transport case studies are included. CCW policies on transport and rural Wales include the encouragement of: (1) visits to the countryside without using a car; (2) the promotion of recreational cycling in the countryside; (3) train and bus services to meet the needs of walkers and cyclists in the countryside; (4) well-designed traffic calming measures in villages and other areas in rural Wales; (5) the promotion of local bus services and imaginative ways to promote bus use; (6) packages that protect and develop rural railway lines for the benefit of local communities and visitors; (7) traffic management strategies that benefit local communities and reduce vehicle numbers on roads where they are unsuitable; (8) an environmentally sustainable approach to transport; and (9) the use of environmentally sensitive Transport and Telecommunications Programmes and Plans (TIPPs), which should be mandatory in Wales.
