STEEL CASTINGS TAILOR-MADE FOR WELDED OFFSHORE STRUCTURES
A type of steel casting has been created that is highly weldable and possesses a yield point of 430N/mm2 for wall thicknesses of up to 100mm, which are standard for connections in plate constructions. Numerous certification tests have confirmed the suitability of this newly developed material for offshore structures. This article looks at the development of cast steel, which is fully compatible with quenched and tempered plate materials. Mechanical properties, fracture mechanics characteristics and the results from fatigue and weldability tests are presented. The results of crack growth rate measurements and fatigue tests in artificial seawater under cathodic overprotection are all included.
