PRELIMINARY STUDY OF TANKERS FOR YEAR-ROUND TRANSPORTATION OF CRUDE OIL FROM OB GULF

A program of studies on the marine transportation of hydrocarbon liquids from Yamal in Russia was carried out. This paper reports on part of the study which investigated the possibility of all year round export of crude oil from Novy Port, using Arctic tankers transiting the Ob Gulf. Three alternatives for the export of crude oil from the Ob Gulf to Murmansk were considered: 1) transportation in summer only using existing tankers at small volumes of production; 2) all year round transportation with the use of existing tankers of appropriate ice class escorted by existing icebreakers, at intermediate volumes of production; and 3) all year- round transportation by large tankers specially built for the Ob Gulf, for large volumes of production. The third alternative is the subject of this paper. Consideration is given to both independently navigating icebreaking tankers (without icebreaker assistance) and to ice class tankers requiring icebreaker support. On the basis of investigations performed, restrictions on the maximum draft of tankers capable of transiting the Ob Gulf were brought to light. Principal technical and operational characteristics of prospective tankers differing in ice classes, icebreaking capability, power and hull lines were determined. Hull lines selection was done taking into account both the seakeeping requirements in open water and the ice quality requirements. These studies are of preliminary nature, and further technical economic studies are required to more accurately define the parameters and specifications on prospective tankers to transport oil from Novy Port.
