PRACTICAL METHOD OF EVALUATING THE OVERALL STRENGTH OF HYDROFOIL CRAFT
This paper outlines the principles of overall-strength calculation for hydrofoil craft, which are of major significance for determination of such features as weight of hull structures and payload performance. The strength of hydrofoil craft is verified in terms of maximum environmental forces developing in most unfavourable service situations. Consideration is given specifically to the cases of craft operation in foilborne mode at maximum speed in design waves and in hull borne mode in heavy seas. In analysing the load patterns of hydrofoil craft, a distinction is made between the hydrodynamic force occuring as a result of hull/seaway interaction and the forces imposed to foil system through variation in wetted surfaces, submergence depth, and incidence of lifting components.
