HARD TIMES IN THE TANKER TRADE

Independent tanker owners are caught in a dilemma. Increasingly onerous legislation, stricter vetting by port states and charterers, and with returns not matching the cost of investing in new tonnage, operators are looking at alternative ways of keeping ships in acceptable condition for the market. One such method is life extension which was chosen for the fleet of 13 vessels operated by a Greek company. The article describes the life extension program for this fleet of vessels and outlines the economic factors.
