CONTROL OF A HIGH-VOLUME INTERCHANGE AREA
A traffic management system (for a 4-mile area through which nearly 350,000 vehicles will pass daily by the year 1980) is being developed that will detect verify and respond to incidents, and divert traffic around an incident that is severe enough to justify diversion. Vehicle movements identified by any of 352 detectors located in the 277 links of the system will be communicated directly to a central control facility for analysis. The data will be processed to determine if an incident condition is indicated. If not, the data is put into storage; if it is, closed circuit television cameras will automatically plan to provide a picture of the general area of the incident. The operator will then visually confirm if an incident has occurred. If not, the system will resume normal operation. If an incident is confirmed, the police emergency vihicles will be dispatched, and route diversion will be instituted.
