IN-SITU SHEAR TEST FOR ROCK FILLS
The authors comment on points raised by discussers relating to the test setup. It is observed that pits in broken or crushed rockfills can be dug conveniently with the sides standing vertically. In such circumstances, the reaction for application of horizontal force on the test specimen can be taken very conveniently and economically from a side of the trench by providing few sleepers on that side. The system of inclined forces acting towards center of the bases of in-situ specimen was selected so that horizontal components of inclined forces act directly on the shearing plane; this should be a prerequisite for such tests. Certain modifications are suggested in the setup recommended for rockfills, so that in-situ shear tests are also successfully performed by the same setup on pervious materials like the compacted fills or deposits of gravels, cobbles, boulders, or of a mixture of these. Brief details are given for pervious deposits or fills containing maximum sizes up to 75 mm, and for similar deposits or fills with maximum sizes up to 300 mm or more.
