UPLIFT RESISTANCE OF PIES IN SAND
The paper describes correlations achieved for piles subjected to uplift loads by comparing computed load versus pile movement curves with the actual behavior of the field piles. The apparatus consisted of a triaxial shear device modified to accept a 1-in. diameter steel pipe pile centered within the soil sample without tip resistance. The results in terms of skin friction/lateral pressure (equalling the tangent of the angle of friction) versus pile movement are illustrated by graphs. The tests were conducted at saturations varying from 75-89 percent without effect on skin friction values. No drainage was allowed throught test. The assumptions involved in this procedure are enumerated, and the procedure to develop the load versus movement curve is detailed. The procedure is relatively simple and well adapted to use in analysis and design problems requiring the motion of piles and also the stiffness of piles subject to dynamic loads.
