PRELIMINARY DESIGN OF MULTI-HULL FISHING VESSELS USING AN EXPERT SYSTEM ENVIRONMENT
A design tool (UBC-SWATH), which is embedded in an expert system environment, is developed to aid naval architects in the design of multi-hulled vessels. The expert system environment called Echidna, incorporates a new type of constraint logic programming. The Echidna concept permits the definition of constraints, ranges, tolerances and relationships for vessel design parameters such as length, beam, and displacement. The built-in constraint processing facilitates the back and forth flow of information between the parameters during each iterative cycle of the design, thereby narrowing the feasible domains of the parameters. The preliminary study incorporates estimation of principal dimensions, weight balance, resistance, and stability algorithms adopted from earlier studies on existing SWATH designs. The results of this study show that the expert system environment offered by UBC-SWATH can be a useful tool for designers in the design of these more comfortable and safer SWATH fishing vessels.
