WORKABILITY OF CONCRETE--A TESTING METHOD

The measurement of consistency does not provide a complete picture of the workability of concrete. An apparatus which forces the concrete to move in some sort of pattern through an opening is better equipped to indicate workability. Powers remoulding test apparatus is an instrument of this type and was used in the tests presented here. However, as the results of the measurement were widely distributed, and did not coincide with those obtained by Powers, a different method of measurement was developed. Tests with the modified method have been carried out in the laboratory and in the field to determine the workability of ready-mixed concrete. The results of these tests indicate that it should be possible to use the remoulding meter to furnish a measured value of the workability of concrete. The method can be applied for consistencies with a slump value of 5 cm and higher. The results indicate that 35-40 blows can be regarded as maximum for concrete with good workability. Concrete with poor working properties requires approximately double this number of blows.
