PROGRAM FOR MAINTENANCE OF ROAD VERGES

PROGRAM FOER SKOETSEL AV VAEGKANTER

Acidification and rational cultivation have changed the composition of flora, and economic tall plants which can thrive on poor soils and often have beautiful flowers. Monocultures reduce the number of species, and different biotypes are developing. Poor soil has been converted by fertilisers. Very few areas of poor soil remain. Road verges have no production requirements and have retained their diversity; they have a large total area and are therefore very important in preserving plants. In the strategy for biological diversity, verges are stated to be an important resource. The National Road Administration has drawn up a programme for verges. Total area of verges is about 2.5 million hectares. Verges have the most diverse biotopes in Sweden. Many verges have very high botanical values. Mowing of verges favours low plants. Verges of special biological value must be identified and preserved. Species diversity must be increased along road network. Proposed verge categories: (1) Very high biological value in the form of residual biotopes, poor dry soil, rare/protected plants. Individual maintenance plans; (2) Verges of high biological value. Together with for example historical or landscape features, they may have high preservation value. Individual maintenance plans; and (3) Existing and newly sown verges where the road authority wants to raise botanical value.
