SOIL PRESSURE UNDERNEATH POINT LOADS
JORDTRUCK UNDER PUNKTLAST
A theory is presented for calculating soil pressure underneath circular, square or rectangular foundation footings subjected to vertical loading. The formulae derived are compared to the results of detailed investigations on the bearing capacity of various soils obtained from field and laboratory tests performed by N Odenmark in the 1940's. Theories and formulae put forward by Boussinesq, Hogg, Westergaard, Odenmark, Terzaghi and Peck are discussed and analysed. According to the author the permissible soil pressures underneath such footings should be increased in order to better correspond with the actual stresses. /TRRL/
