DYNAMIC CONTROL OF TRAFFIC QUEUES

The study is concerned with a situation where traffic signals are situated at the start and end of a street network where queues form. It considers closed-loop feedback control systems where one or more detectors measure the length of the queue to be stabilised. The control problem is expressed diagramatically showing the stages in the control cycle. The stability of the system is affected by inherent delays such as the time to change the traffic signal plan, the time for signals to have effect, the travel time, the queue accumulation time and the measuring time. Three different terms that could be used for control logic are examined; results are given for tests using control proportional to occupancy error and integral error. Differential control is not tried because it was feared that it would magnify the fluctuations. Results from several experiments using dynamic control are tabulated. Future plans to improve the software are indicated. /TRRL/
