TRAFFIC OPERATION AT ROADWORKS ON DUAL-CARRIAGEWAYS
The authors examine characteristics of common methods of controlling traffic at roadworks. Factors influencing the choice of operating systems are discussed. The advantages of carriageway closures with two-way operation and diversion to alternative routes are discussed. A contra-flow system that may be used on three lane carriageways separating cars from slow moving heavy vehicles is described. The usefulness of an empty buffer lane between the flowing primary and secondary traffic is illustrated. The authors discuss factors affecting the width of lanes when using narrow lane techniques which are often applied to relatively short lengths of obstruction. Traffic characteristics of single and two-lane operation are tabulated. Methods of determining the cost of traffic management are defined. The authors imply that for effective traffic operation the minimum width of two lane motorways should be at least 11M and the provision and design of crossovers needs careful consideration. /TRRL/
