A STUDY OF THE MU-METER SIDEWAYS FORCE MEASUREMENT OF FRICTION
This paper can be divided into three parts. The first looks at the effect of towing speed and texture of the road surface on the mu-meter sideways force measurement of friction. This testing was carried out by the Department of Main Roads, N.S.W. The Conclusions confirm the need to consider the speed of traffic in designing the surfacing of a road. A fine textured surface is recommended for roads where traffic is restricted to slow speeds whereas a coarse textured surface is recommended for high speed roads. The second part considers the interpretation of these results in relation to Yandell's (1971) theory of hysteretic sliding friction. This theory enables the test results to be extrapolated to a much higher sliding speed than is possible with a sideways force measurement of friction. The third part considers the appropriateness of the sideways force measurement of friction to measure the skid resistance of a rural highway. Although braking is an important mode of operation of rural traffic, the sideways force measurement of friction is shown to correlate with the frequency of wet road accidents. (A) /TRRL/
