PERFORMANCE OF THE CRASH CUSHION ATTENUATING TERMINAL (CAT) IN TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS

The objective of the study was to report the results of the continuing monitoring of the performance of the Crash Cushion Attenuating Terminal (CAT) in traffic accidents. The documented performance of the CAT system in traffic accidents justifies additional use. A recommended location would be at medians and bridge abutments in narroe medians. While accidents involving this system should continue to be evaluated, this evaluation results in the conclusion that the CAT system could be classified as operational. The performance of the CAT system indicates a couple of areas which should be addressed. For installations in raised median, the raised median should be modified so that the back side of the system would be at the proper height. This modification has been designed with changes made at locations on the Western Kentucky Parkway. The design of the system should be evaluated to determine if modifications should be made to allow more translation to occur.
