CONSOLIDATION TESTS
The author states that hydraulic consolidometers are available in a number of sizes and that they offer many advantages when compared with conventional casagrande oedometers. Some of the advantages claimed are that they facilitate the use of a back pressure to ensure saturation of the specimen, permit the control of drainage so that the start of a test may be determined precisely, and that they are flexible in use making controlled gradients, constant rate of strain and constant rate of stress tests possible with little modification. The design and use of a hydraulic oedometer known as the rowe cell are discussed, and it is recommended that all such cells be calibrated. It is suggested that in many cases it may be necessary to replace the manufacturers diaphragm with more flexible material. /TRRL/
