THE MEDWAY TUNNEL. SUPPLEMENT TO NEW CIVIL ENGINEER - JUNE 1996
The supplement commemorates the completion of the construction of the Medway Tunnel, in the English county of Kent. The completion will benefit local people, stimulate the economic regeneration of the area, encourage long-term jobs, and allow businesses to grow without creating traffic problems. The articles in this supplement describe many aspects of the project. The project was an excellent example of collaboration between the UK Government, local authorities, and contractors. It was technically challenging, fully used the engineers' ingenuity, and was also contractually innovative. The tunnel had to be built to relieve increasingly heavy traffic congestion in the area. Tunnel construction began first, because of its longer time span, but unfortunately completion of its link roads was delayed, partly because local authorities' road funding was less than expected. An immersed tube tunnel was chosen for the Medway crossing, in preference to several bridge designs. The tunnel, designed and constructed by the Tarmac GBM consortium, has an important role to play in Kent's county-wide transport strategy.
