ENVIRONMENT FILE 1996. REPORT OF THE ICE ENVIRONMENT PANEL
This report is by the Environment Panel of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). The most significant European and UK environmental legislation is summarised and how it will affect the civil engineering profession. National policy issues and sustainable development are discussed. The function of the Environment Agency is outlined. Engineering issues examined include energy generation and pollution, ground contamination and waste management. Environmental aspects of maritime, structural and building engineering are considered. Transport issues discussed include regional variations, travel reduction and avoidance and the effect of policy changes. European and UK action on drainage, ground water, waste water and drinking water is outlined. Summaries are given of the contribution of the ICE towards policy developments and the promotion of good practice for each topic. A bibliography is included to provide references to more detailed information.
