COMPACTING FACTOR: A NEW TEST
The major limitation of the current test method as specified in BS 1881 is that some 25 kg of concrete needs to be weighed in a partially and fully compacted state to the nearest 10 GM. The author gives the theory behind his method using a modified form of the standard apparatus to measure a change in height keeping the weight constant. Compaction may be achieved by a conventional vibrator or by rodding. A series of tests to compare values of compacting factor between 0.95 and 0.78 by the new method and BS 1881 show good correlation. The advantages of the new method are that since no weighing is required only simple robust equipment is used, the compacting factor is obtained more easily and quickly than in the conventional method. The new method is more suitable for site application. /TRRL/
